It seems a bit scary, but computer researchers have found a way to make the circuits inside chips self-assemble themselves.
Currently each chip is made up of circuits etched using chemicals and light. More and more circuits must be crammed into chips each year to make them more powerful, and manufacturers are getting to a point where current technology is struggling to miniaturise any further.
Researchers in the Netherlands found a way to make molecules of a chemical self-assemble to create a circuit. Currently they can only create very basic circuits, but they are smaller than existing technology can create. And it means even more powerful chips that partly create themselves are potentially just a few years away.
It’s exciting - but we think these researchers should watch the Terminator films again before they get too carried away.
